The strikingly beautiful Green Violetear is 4 inches long. The violet feathers behind the eyes are not really ears. They flare out when the bird is in an aggressive stance. High in the Talamanca Mountains of southwestern Costa Rica, flowering bushes are sometimes covered with these glittering little jewels, with the males chirping incessantly from high perches while searching for mates.
